When you think of Kansas City, you think of two things.  One, BBQ.  Two, cows.  The Hereford House has been a staple in Kansas City for a number of decades and has earned a reputation for having some of the finest steaks anywhere.  They have three restaurants in the area.  The oldest, being the one in downtown Kansas City.  The second, located in the Town Center Plaza in Leawood, KS.  Just recently, another Hereford House has popped up in Independence, MO about a mile east of Highway 291 on I-70.  This was a welcome surprise, since I enjoy a big mouthwatering rare steak but not necessarily the drive to the first two.  All  three restaurants have my seal of approval.  Unless you're just ordering a salad and water, expect a $30-40 meal for one person.  Naturally that all depends on how big you want your steaks, or how many adult beverages you partake of.  The one that just opened up in east Independence is connected to a Hilton hotel that opened just a little earlier than Hereford House, so you can anticipate a sizeable dinner crowd.  The waiting area may be a little chilly if it's cold outside since it's located next to a big window, an uninsulated corridor, and I didn't see any heating vents.  I'm sure the waiting area will be toasty in the summertime due to the same reason.  Never fear, the food makes up for that quite considerably.  Be sure to order a glass of 25 year old MacAllan Scotch.  Okay, so it's $30 a glass, but you won't regret it.
